Princess Anne Has Stories to Tell
- and People are Listening!
Free Cell Phone Tour Celebrates Local
Heritage
Over the weekend, a downtown home owner met a visitor
from British Columbia who was taking a leisurely morning
stroll through town, cell phone tour brochure in hand,
listening to stories about the rich heritage of Princess
Anne.
Whether you've lived in Princess Anne
all your life, or you're a visitor from another country,
our stories are sure to entertain, amuse and inform.
The tour highlights over 300 years of
Princess Anne history from the Colonial era, Revolutionary,
Civil and World Wars, the heyday of steamboat travel,
the arrival of the railroad and the first "talking"
picture show.
The free Heritage Cell Phone tour features
68 stories and 40 sites about the people and historic
places throughout the town. The free tour is available
24/7.
Brochures are available at local businesses, Princess
Anne Library, Somerset County Visitors Center, Princess
Anne Welcome Center, and University of Maryland Eastern
Shore (UMES).

Greg's Farmers' Market Tip |

|
Have a bountiful harvest from
your garden or get a good buy at the Farmers' Market?
Try dehydrating to preserve your harvest.
Mix those extra ripe berries with some apple sauce to
make fruit leather. Did you know you can dry melons?
Stop by the market and get some helpful
tips from Joy and Albert or Organic Greg.

Dear
Friends of Main Street,
As the first 30 days on the
job comes to a close, I want to sincerely thank all
of you folks that I have had the pleasure to meet both
in person and online.
A great deal has been accomplished
in these 30 days: ice cream social at the Library, planning
for upcoming group tours, website planning, Heritage
Cell Phone Tour release, landscaping and Welcome Sign
finalization, meeting with State on thoroughfare
gateway signage, facade grants, Main Street Reception
at Independence Hall, Farmers' Market on Thursdays,
the Crafts Market on Saturdays, Story Time at Barefoot
Baby, planning the local Artists Reception, a host of
media events and news articles as well as the Main Street
Newsletter.
Most of this is through the
efforts and hard work and leadership of the Committee
Leads and I am so very impressed with their talents
and ideas. And there are still yet others that
are active and have made things happen over the last
30 days in Princess Anne that so greatly add to the
quality of life in Princess Anne, especially the Commissioners
and Chamber. To everyone I want to celebrate and
thank you for your dedication and efforts as we begin
the next 30 days.
Along, those lines, I extend
an invitation to join our Main Street Committees as
we work together, planning and executing Main Street
activities. Please notify me if you would enjoy
volunteering and being a part of this great effort!
Design Committee, lead by John Nicholson
Promotions Committee, lead by Charlotte Scharf
Economic Restructuring Committee, lead
by Jay Parker
Organizational Committee, (Carolyn)
I hope, with adequate volunteers
to be able to step back from the details of each committee
and cohesively manage all efforts at a higher level.
This will enable me to participate at an increasing
level at the State and National markets to make sure
that everyone knows what a great town Princess Anne
is, for both business and family relocation, and for
its rich heritage and cultural offerings as a destination.
All My Best,
Carolyn Marquis

New Welcome Sign and Landscaping
|
|
Landscaping
Adds Color for Downtown Visitors
We're working to improve signage and beautify
our downtown area, and we have a two part plan for the
brick sign approaching the downtown.
First, we've completed attractive landscaping
around the sign, including holly trees, roses, black-eyed
susan and hydrangea.. These plantings will add
an attractive feature for residents and visitors as
they approach downtown.
Still to come is a permanent sign,
"Historic Princess Anne", between the brick columns.
And, the new sign will feature changable lettering
that will be used to announce community events and activities.

| Plein
Air - Paint Princess Anne |
Save
the Date - Saturday, September 26, 2009
Have you heard of plein air
painting? "Plein air" is a French expression that means
"in the open air", and is especially used to describe
painting outdoors, when artists leave their studios
to paint along roadsides, on sidewalks, in gardens and
parks to caputre subjects in their natural
elements.
The town of Easton is host to a week long event (http://www.pleinaireaston.com/)
and it draws thousands of visitors. An ever-popular
category is 'Vanishing Landscapes' of the Eastern Shore.
In September, Princess Anne will host its
first plein air event; the beauty of our streets, homes,
churches, gardens and park will be rich material to
inspire visiting artists. Please contact
Carolyn Marquis if you are interested in working with
our Promotions Committee on this fabulous project.
